Chapter Eight

It was late when Amita and I arrived home from Crete. The house was in darkness. Matt clearly was not there. The mail was scattered by the entrance. He had not been home for days.

‘Where’s dad?’ Amita asked as she stumbled through the door after me.

‘That’s a good question,’ I answered with a sigh.

‘You don’t know?’ She asked leaving her case in the entrance and following me to the kitchen.

‘No, I have no idea where Matt is.’

As I entered the kitchen, I saw a note on the counter top, “Rachel, I am in Spain. I hope to back on Saturday.”

‘Well I guess that answers all the questions.’

‘Mum, are you and dad getting a divorce?’

‘What?! No, we just have a few issues to work through.’

‘I am sorry, I know it’s all my fault,’ she said in a morose tone.

‘Oh honey, please don’t say that. This has nothing to do with you.’

I pulled away and looked into my daughter’s face, her eyes filled with tears. ‘What are you talking about Amita? You have not ruined my life. You have made my life.’

‘I did, I ruined your life when you had to leave India and now I have caused dad to leave. I turn everyone away!’

‘Darling, look at me, your dad has not left. He will be home soon and as for India if I had to live my life over again I would not change a single thing. Ruin? No you are the best part of me and I would not trade you for anyone.’ I held her for a while, until she was calm and as soon as I reminded her she had to upload her photographs and email Andreas, she left the room.

I poured myself a glass of wine and read the note again. He hoped to be home tomorrow, this means there was a possibility that he may not come home then or at all. I thought about what that would mean and felt a painful stab through my heart. I do love him I hoped he knew. I was far too tired to deal with any more emotions after a week digging into my past. I felt I should call Matt but thought better of it. I did not want to intrude on his time but it was quite inexcusable that he had not bothered to let me know what his plans or intentions were. I made my way upstairs and past Amita room,
